Environmental Effects

Fishing activity can potentially impact on the marine environment in many ways. Some of these effects can be mitigated through careful fisheries management which is discussed further in the section below on elements of best practice.

The potential impacts can be classified into four broad categories, which are described in more detail below as the effects on:

  • Target fish populations
  • Non-target species
  • Seabed habitats
  • Marine ecosystems
