The purpose of the EEZ Act, which is relevant to all decisions made under the Act, is to promote the ‘sustainable management’ of natural resources of the EEZ and CS. Sustainable management is defined to mean: 35

... managing the use, development, and protection of natural resources in a way, or at a rate, that enables people to provide for their economic well-being while—

(a) sustaining the potential of natural resources (excluding minerals) to meet the reasonably foreseeable needs of future generations; and

(b) safeguarding the life-supporting capacity of the environment; and

(c) avoiding, remedying, or mitigating any adverse effects of activities on the environment.
